Turkey's COVID-19 Situation Is "Out Of Control", Health Experts Warn

Via AhvalNews.com,

Health experts have warned that Turkey’s coronavirus situation is out of control and that deaths from the disease could soon be on a par with Italy or Spain, reported the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network on Tuesday.

“The recent data on cases and death tolls shows that the s

ituation is out of control in Turkey. If the necessary measures are not taken, Turkey will be like Italy or Spain, where the daily death toll is in the hundreds,” Emrah Altındiş, a Turkish professor from Harvard University’s Medical Faculty, told BIRN.

Turkey only reported its first coronavirus patient on March 11, but cases and deaths have rapidly risen since then. The Turkish health minister confirmed on Tuesday seven more deaths due to the coronavirus and announced 343 new cases, raising the total number of cases in the country to 1,872.

Turkey has halted incoming flights from dozens of countries and closed a wide range of non-essential businesses and venues, and announced a curfew on elderly and vulnerable citizens over the weekend, though it has refrained from enforcing a full lockdown.

However, some medical experts have said that the measures are insufficient.

Altındiş said that South Korea was successful in restraining the pandemic because it was testing 20,000 a day, and that China reduced transmission by shutting down the infected city of Wuhan – but he said that there had not been widespread testing or strict lockdowns of major cities in Turkey.

“Either the government is hiding the real numbers [of cases], or silly things are happening in Turkey,” he said.

“The Turkish government is making propaganda to show that the process is being managed well. They know this situation will have very severe political and economic consequences.”

The Health Ministry has tested more than 24,000 people, but this number may quickly rise after the arrival of 50,000 quick diagnostic kits from China on Monday. A further 300,000 are expected to arrive on Thursday, the ministry said.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) urged the government on March 23 to be more transparent regarding the pandemic.

“The cities and towns where cases were confirmed should be announced publicly as well as death and infected people’s gender and age range,” TBB said.

One doctor who works in a university hospital told BIRN under condition of anonymity: “What I observe in my hospital and the general situation is that the real numbers are at least two to three times higher than the numbers that the government announced. The COVID-19 pandemic is now out of control.”

The same doctor said the Turkish Health Ministry seemed to be implementing a wait-and-see policy, but this meant it was late in implementing necessary steps.

“It seems that this week is the most critical since the incubation period for the new coronavirus is around 14 days,” he said. “Many people will flock to hospitals and we will be speaking of thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths on a daily basis. Turkey will be a second Italy or worse,” he told BIRN.

The government has introduced a a 100 billion lira ($15.4 billion) aid package to help Turkey's economy cope with the global coronavirus outbreak, but some economists and opposition politicians have criticised it as being insufficient.

“The government has asked people to stay at home but these people have to work and feed their families,” the doctor told BIRN.

“The government’s economic package has had no effect on ordinary people. If it does not support these people financially, we cannot talk about stopping this pandemic.”

50 New Infections Every Hour In Iran, One Death Per 10 Minutes: Health Ministry

Despite that between Tuesday and Wednesday of this week Iran witnessed its biggest ever single-day spike in Covid-19 cases, authorities are still struggling to get everyone to observe quarantine and self-isolation measures, especially after throngs of hardline Shia demonstrators have gathered to protest the closure of two of the country's holiest shrines in the city of Qom.

Toward this end, Iran's Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur made an astounding statement to put things in perspective, saying the current soaring numbers show that

"In Iran, every ten minutes one person dies from the coronavirus, 50 get infected."

He added in the Twitter statement "And every 10 minutes one person dies."

He further urged citizens to think about this extreme risk every time they break national directives and go out to visit people or travel to other cities.

This as on Thursday the national number of cases climbed to 18,407 — a jump of 1,046 cases from the day prior.

The death toll in Iran from the coronavirus outbreak has risen to 1,284, state media reported on Thursday, among those 149 people dying of the virus in the last 24 hours, with 1,046 new cases emerging.

Earlier this week another top health official issued an 'extreme scenario' warning in order to urge citizens to stay home, saying he expects "millions" of Iranians to die of the disease.

Among other drastic measures the country has implemented, Tehran says it's now temporarily sent some 85,000 prisoners home to ensure the pandemic doesn't rip through the nation's overcrowded prisons and jails.

Some countries in the West, including cities across the United States, are actually considering the temporary release of non-violent offenders from local jails for the sake of preventing the spread.

State Department Issues Global Health Advisory: Level 4 - "Do Not Travel"

Update (1610ET): Following the Politico report from Thursday morning, the State Department has declared a "Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel" warning, urging all Americans to halt all international travel, and requested citizens abroad to return home "immediately" amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

— Travel - State Dept (@TravelGov) March 19, 2020

Here's the Level 4 advisory in full:

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.

On March 14, the Department of State authorized the departure of U.S. personnel and family members from any diplomatic or consular post in the world who have determined they are at higher risk of a poor outcome if exposed to COVID-19 or who have requested departure based on a commensurate justification. These departures may limit the ability of U.S. Embassies and consulates to provide services to U.S. citizens.

For the latest information regarding COVID-19, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website.

You are encouraged to visit travel.state.gov to view individual Travel Advisories for the most urgent threats to safety and security. Please also visit the website of the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate to see information on entry restrictions, foreign quarantine policies, and urgent health information provided by local governments.

Travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency. The Department uses these Alerts to convey information about terrorist threats, security incidents, planned demonstrations, natural disasters, etc. In an emergency, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate or call the following numbers: 1(888) 407-4747 (toll-free in the United States and Canada) or 1 (202) 501-4444 from other countries or jurisdictions.

If you decide to travel abroad or are already outside the United States:

· Consider returning to your country of residence immediately using whatever commercial means are available.

· Have a travel plan that does not rely on the U.S. Government for assistance.

· Review and follow the CDC's guidelines for the prevention of coronavirus.

· Check with your airline, cruise lines, or travel operators regarding any updated information about your travel plans and/or restrictions.

· Visit travel.state.gov to view individual Travel Advisories for the most urgent threats to safety and security.

· Visit our Embassy webpages on COVID-19 for information on conditions in each country or jurisdiction.

With COVID-19 cases and deaths surging in the US and Europe, the US State Department is set to announce Level 4 travel restrictions on all international travel, reports Politico.

The State Department's new warning is expected to advise all Americans abroad to either return to the US or shelter in place as the virus crisis continues to worsen.

The new travel advisory is expected to inform all Americans not to travel abroad.

Last week, the State Department issued a Level 3 Global Health Advisory, urging Americans to reconsider international travel. It appears in a week's time, the pandemic has gotten much worse.

Here are the current travel restrictions on the State Department's website:

US citizens will be permitted to return from the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Schengen area. The Department of Homeland Security has issued instructions requiring US passengers that are coming from (or transiting) the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Schengen area to travel through select airports where the US Government has implemented enhanced screening procedures.

The new travel advisory could be announced imminently.

Health Experts Slam "Wooden" UK Coronavirus Response: "Playing Roulette With People's Lives"

Authored by Steve Watson via Summit News,

Several health experts have eviscerated the UK government’s sluggish response to the coronavirus outbreak, charging that measures only now being taken should have been implemented a month ago.

Richard Horton, the editor of the Lancet Medical Journal a

ccused the British government of “playing roulette” with people’s lives by not implementing “social distancing and closure policies” sooner.

Meanwhile, Professor John Ashton, a former director of Public Health England slammed the government’s response as “complacent”.

“I’m tearing my hair out really, with this,” Ashton urged, adding that the action taken “feels wooden and academic, and we’ve wasted a month when we should have been engaging with the public.”

“If this now spreads the way it looks likely to spread, there will not be enough hospital beds and people will have to be nursed at home. We should have gotten a grip on this a month ago,” Ashton raged in a BBC interview.

Ashton slammed the lack of testing of people who have returned from virus-stricken Italy, saying “I want to know why we are not testing, why we haven’t tested those people coming back from Italy and who are now amongst us. We’ve got a recipe for community spread here.”

Ashton compared Britain’s response to that of Bahrain, noting that the country set up a “war room” five weeks ago and have been constantly carrying out “extensive testing”.

Videos have shown people returning from Italy and other European countries just walking straight through British airports with zero checks in place.

It’s a similar story throughout Western Europe where borders have remained open as normal and people have been effectively allowed to spread the virus unhindered.

Ashton previously accused prime minister Boris Johnson of treating the British public “like children”.

“What the COBR should have been doing, with the chief medical officer alongside and the advisors is on a day-to-day basis taking stock and looking ahead, looking round corners, seeing what’s coming next and taking the public on that journey.” he asserted.

The British government is expected to announce more stringent lockdown orders this afternoon, but it may all be too little too late.

Expect Up To 40% Of Tehran's Population To Be Infected In 2 Weeks: Iranian Health Official

With the daily soaring infection rate and death toll inside Iran officially at 124 deaths amid 4747 confirmed cases as of early Friday — though true numbers are believed much higher — all eyes are on the largely unprepared country given it's the biggest outbreak epicenter outside the virus' origin country of China.

Health officials worry

that Iran could be a sign of things to come in the much of the rest of the world — a deeply alarming prospect given a member of Iran's National Committee for Influenza and specialist in infectious diseases, Dr. Masoud Mardani, has just issued a stark warning for the capital city of Tehran, brimming with about 9 million people and over 12 million in the greater metropolitan area.

Dr. Mardai said he expects 30 to 40 percent of Tehran's population to be infected with coronavirus within the next two weeks.

He was quoted in state media as saying:

“Coronavirus is rapidly spreading … we estimate that 30 to 40 percent of Tehran’s population will be infected by the end of this (Persian) month.”

The current Persian month is the last month of the Persian calendar and ends on March 20, Al Arabiya English notes.

According to a summary of his statements given to an Iranian newspaper, he said further:

...an infected person could transmit the virus to four people at the same time. Therefore it is expected that 30-40 per cent of Tehran’s population will be infected with the virus by March.

He pointed out that many Iranians visit health centers and hospitals when they have regular flu, believing it is a coronavirus.

Dr. Mardai is urging people who think they're sick to stay home instead of potentially infecting overcrowding medical clinics and hospitals.

He said further:

Instead, they should receive treatment at home rather than hospitals in these circumstances. He pointed out that if the patient feels the three distinctive symptoms of the coronavirus; then he must be immediately transferred to the hospital and be subjected to quarantine.

This further means that the next two weeks could see overall global numbers of confirmed cases soar, if his predictions are correct.

Tehran, source: Shutterstock.

Even though Iran's official confirmed Covid-19 cases are in the thousands, it was over a week ago that specialists were already speculating that the true number had already reached 20,000 at that point.

Inability for rapid and effective testing, as well as alleged lack of transparency especially in the early weeks of the outbreak, means we will likely see numbers explode exponentially as has already been happening over the past days.

13th US Virus Case Confirmed In San Diego; China Fires 2 Top Health Officials Over Botched Response

A 13th case of the Wuhan coronavirus has been confirmed in the US after one of the Americans who traveled to California from the epicenter of the outbreak on an evacuation flight last week has been determined to have contracted the virus.

Like with cockroaches, where there is one case of coronavirus, there will likely be more, especially since the

patient traveled on a long-haul flight with dozens of others, increasingly the likelihood that at least some of them were infected. The State Department chartered four flights to rescue more than 800 Americans who had been trapped in Wuhan by the quarantine passed by Chinese officials on Jan. 23. One American who apparently opted to stay behind in Wuhan has succumbed to the virus, according to Chinese officials.

Even more alarmingly, the evacuee was accidentally mistakenly released from UC San Diego Medical Center, though she wasn't released to the public: All evacuees will spend 14 days on designated military bases being repurposed as quarantines. The case was the first in San Diego.

Initially, the hospital reported that four patients undergoing testing at the hospital had tested negative for the virus, and they were discharged and returned to federal quarantine at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where more than 200 evacuees are staying. However, "further testing revealed that one of the four patients tested positive for 2019-nCoV," CDC officials advised San Diego Public Health on Monday morning, and the person was returned to hospital" for observation, the hospital said in a statement.

The CDC said it's tracing all of the individual's contacts since arriving in the US, Reuters reports.

"CDC is conducting a thorough contact investigation of the person who has tested positive to determine contacts and to assess if those contacts had high risk exposures."

Most US-China flights have been suspended by the White House, and only a handful of American nationals arriving on commercial flights from China have been quarantined under rules imposed on Feb. 2 to curb the virus’s spread.

There are now at least 3 cases of the virus diagnosed in California.

One of the private jets that carried Americans back from Wuhan

Out of eight states that have set up airport screenings for the virus, only six of them said they had no one under quarantine, while NY said it had 4 and Illinois aid it had a "tiny" number.

In China, the scapegoating continued on Tuesday as Beijing fired two of the most senior health officials in Hubei just hours after officials reported 108 new deaths from the virus on Monday, the first time a daily death toll has topped 100. Only 2 of the more than 1,000 deaths occurred outside mainland China.

Zhang Jin, the Communist party boss of the provincial health commission in Hubei, and its director Liu Yingzi were removed by decree of the party yesterday.

In their stead, senior Beijing official Chen Yixin has been sent to Wuhan to lead virus-suppression efforts at the crisis's ground zero. Chen, a former deputy party chief in Hubei, will be deputy head of a central government group dispatched to the province.

Additionally, 3 senior Wuhan officials have been summoned to Beijing to explain their failings, according to state media reports cited by the SCMP.

Authorities were accused of playing down the extent of the outbreak in early January because they wanted to project an image of stability.

Wuhan authorities also faced criticism for going ahead with an annual public banquet for 40,000 families just days before the city was placed on lockdown, according to the Daily Mail. Beijing is of course trying to deflect attention from the senior Party leadership's failures - failures that are implicit in their policies which guarantee the suppression of information during crises. However, the death of Dr. Li Wenliang late last week made it almost inevitable that the locals in Wuhan and Hubei would be punished - after all, it was Wuhan police who initially reprimanded Dr. Li for his warnings about the outbreak. Warnings that, if heeded, would have helped save hundreds of lives.

A top Red Cross official in Wuhan was also removed for dereliction of duty earlier this month. Local officials have faced an intense backlash almost since the beginning, once it had become clear that the virus had been allowed to spread within Wuhan without police or health authorities doing anything to stop it.

"Right now I'm in a state of guilt, remorse and self-reproach" said the official in an interview with CCTV last month."

"If strict control measures had been taken earlier, the result would have been better than now."

In South Korea, Reuters reports that the first confirmed coronavirus patient is returning to Wuhan (apparently despite the lockdown) after being discharged by the South Korean medical team that treated her.

While a leading coronavirus expert in Hong Kong warns that nCoV could infect "60% to 80%" of the global population if left unchecked, on the mainland, the state media continues to flood the population with overly optimistic projections and silly human-interest stories.  Zhong Nanshan, the Chinese government’s senior medical adviser, said Tuesday that the outbreak might already have peaked.

In an interview with Reuters, the 83-year-old scientists who helped fight the SARS epidemic said his model showed the virus should peak in the middle of February.

Echoing comments from President Trump, the scientist added that he hoped the virus would peter out by April.

"I hope this outbreak or this event may be over in something like April," he said in a hospital run by Guangzhou Medical University, where 11 coronavirus patients were being treated.

"We don’t know why it’s so contagious, so that’s a big problem," added Zhong, whose previous forecast of an earlier peak turned out to be premature. He said there was a gradual reduction in new cases in the southern province of Guangdong where he was, and also in Zhejiang and elsewhere.

Finally, the man from Brighton believed to be the 'super spreader' linked to 11 cases involving a French ski chateau has broken his silence, according to the Guardian.

His name is Steve Walsh, he's 53 years old, and this is his story:

"I would like to thank the NHS for their help and care – whilst I have fully recovered, my thoughts are with others who have contracted coronavirus."

"As soon as I knew I had been exposed to a confirmed case of coronavirus I contacted my GP, NHS 111 and Public Health England."

"I was advised to attend an isolated room at hospital, despite showing no symptoms, and subsequently self-isolated at home as instructed."

"When the diagnosis was confirmed I was sent to an isolation unit in hospital, where I remain, and, as a precaution, my family was also asked to isolate themselves."

"I also thank friends, family and colleagues for their support during recent weeks and I ask the media to respect our privacy."

Over in Hong Kong, dozens of residents of a housing complex in Hong Kong have been quarantined after two people living on separate floors were infected with the virus, raising the possibility that it might have been traveling through the pipes.

Per local officials from Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection, the decision to partially evacuate the building was made after investigators discovered an unsealed bathroom pipe in the apartment of a 62-year-old woman found to be infected. She lives 10 floors below another resident who was found to be infected, the NYT reports.

Yesterday, we reported that the Westerdam cruise ship had finally been granted permission to dock in Thailand after being turned away from three other countries, despite having ZERO confirmed nCoV cases aboard. Now, Thailand has rejected it, leaving it once again adrift. The ship is set to run out of food and other essentials in just two days.

Hard-Partying Culture At London's Elite Law Firms Is Ruining Lawyers' Mental Health, Study Finds

What do you do with a drunken lawyer? Advise them to seek professional help.

Or at least that's what one recent study from the UK's professional body for UK lawyers determined.

According to the FT, law firms' hard-charging, hard-drinking culture is having a negative impact on the mental health of many atto

rneys by encouraging harassment and bullying.

For who aren't familiar with the legal world in the UK, this is probably the most important thing to remember: Five massive multinational London-headquartered firms dominate the landscape. The firms - Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Linklaters and Slaughter and May - are collectively referred to as the "magic circle".

These insanely profitable white-shoe law firms set the tone for the practices and culture of the legal world in the UK, and after a series of high-profile sex scandals rocked the industry last year, the industry has become somewhat more introspective.

Reports about an event that portrayed Freshfields' drinking culture and featured an event involving drinking champagne at 10:30 in the morning.

In October, former Freshfields’ partner Ryan Beckwith was asked whether the “magic circle” firm had a “drinking culture” following revelations about an event which began with lawyers drinking champagne at 10.30am.

Last month Baker McKenzie’s former London head Gary Senior was also forced to discuss his consumption of alcohol at a work event during the course of an ongoing hearing into allegations against him.

Mr Beckwith and Mr Senior denied any allegations of misconduct.

In response to this finding, the UK's Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society of England and Wales on Monday released guidelines on how firms can foster a less permissive climate that prohibits harassment of both the sexual and physical nature.

On Monday, the young lawyers’ division of the Law Society, which surveyed almost 2,000 junior lawyers last year, said unhealthy approaches to alcohol consumption had a potentially negative impact on health, bullying, harassment, diversity and productivity, and argued firms needed to come up with inclusive alcohol policies.

Recommendations included offering better low-alcohol or alcohol-free alternatives at firm events instead of “a warm jug of orange juice or something fizzy”, and considering other times of day for networking and social events, as well as alternative activities such as sports.

In the survey, which stemmed from an annual mental health survey, 93% of lawyers reported feeling stressed in their roles, and turning to alcohol and other unhealthy coping methods because of it.

The guidelines stem from an annual survey examining the mental health and wellbeing of junior lawyers, launched three years ago in response to fears over the levels of stress suffered by lawyers and conducted most recently last year.

Of the young lawyers surveyed between January and March 2019, more than 93 per cent reported feeling stressed in their role, and many said they used alcohol as a coping mechanism and that it was a contributing factor to mental health issues.

The report said it was “often reported that juniors or those at recruitment events particularly feel pressure to consume alcohol to show that they can fit in with the team, socialise well and secure their future career progression”.

The same study in 2018 found that of almost 1,000 junior lawyers, more than 82 per cent of respondents had experienced stress in their role and 26 per cent experienced extreme stress and anxiety.

It's only January, but we have a funny feeling that this year's round of holiday parties will leave a little something to be desired...

gments about Trump’s political positions. Bandy X. Lee, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, has been one of the most outspoken and last week urged House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to demand some ill-defined “hold” on the president pending psychiatric examination. Her position latest position is utterly bizarre but has been treated as a serious discussion point by some media like Salon magazine.

Lee previously served as the editor of the book “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President” and has continually argued for removal on the basis for mental illness. I previously discussed the difficulties in pursuing such loose analysis as the basis for removal under the 25th Amendment.

Lee’s most recent call for some form of intervention by Pelosi seems utterly disconnected from the constitutional process. She bizarrely treated this as an office intervention. Lee told Salon that “As a co-worker, she has the right to have him submit to an involuntary evaluation, but she has not. I am beginning to believe that a mental health hold, which we have tried to avoid, will become inevitable.”

I am at a loss on this one. Does Lee think that Pelosi can “as a co-worker” force the President into an involuntary evaluation? The only provision from incapacity of a president is found in the 25th Amendment and it omits such a workplace evaluation process. As I previously discussed, Section 4 has, essentially, two avenues for dragging a president from the Oval Office. First, there is the mutiny option. A vice president and a majority of the Cabinet can agree that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office” and notify Congress that the vice president intends to take over. If Vice President Pence could get eight Cabinet officers to sign a letter to that effect, he would immediately become the “Acting President.”  But if the president then declares to Congress that “no inability exists,” Trump could resume his powers.

Pence and the rebellious Cabinet would then have to send another declaration within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House that says, more or less, don’t believe a word, he’s unfit. Once Congress had the second declaration, if not already in session, it would have 48 hours to assemble to debate the issue. It would then have 21 days to vote on the president’s fitness. To remove the president, two-thirds of both houses would have to agree. If Congress did not vote within 21 days, the president would get his power back.

Notably, Lee again seems triggered by policies or actions with which she disagrees. This latest call for co-worker intervention was due to the killing of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. I also raised concerns over this action as a possible assassination in violation of U.S. law and an act of war under international law. However, Trump is not the first president to attack individuals on foreign soil whether it was Osama Bin Laden or the attempt on former Libyan President Muammar el-Qaddafi.

Lee’s medical diagnosis is hard to untangle from her political judgment. She insists that this is “exactly what someone who lacks mental capacity would do.”:

This is exactly the kind of dangerous event we foresaw as Donald Trump’s response to the impeachment proceedings, just as his pulling troops from northern Syria was a direct response to the announcement of an impeachment inquiry...

In other words, he is extremely drawn to actions that would help him appear as if he has mental capacity, such as a ‘presidential strike’ against an enemy, while avoiding the proper procedures, such as briefing with Congress, that might expose his lack of capacity...

What we do not expect from someone who lacks mental capacity is rational, reality-based decision making that is non-impulsive, non-reckless, and cognizant of consequences.”

She adds that his attacks on President Obama must also be treated as a reflection of his mental illness:

“Since he is incapable of putting himself in another person’s shoes, he projects his own thoughts entirely onto others. Hence, we can deduce that what he has said about Mr. Obama has nothing to do with the former president but has only to do with the way he himself thinks.”

At points, Lee seems herself a bit adrift. When asked about the widespread criticism of her claims of mental illness, Lee responded “My critics do not have an argument. There are many situations where I hoped that my formulation would be wrong — but now that my hypotheses have been tested so many times to 100 percent precision.”

Really? She is 100 percent right without ever actually personally examining the subject.

Then the interview gets downright batty when the 25th Amendment is raised:

“Yes. In this country, no one is above the law, and as far as mental health laws and the president are concerned, there is no Office of Legal Counsel memo, no exceptions and at this time not even confidentiality, since he has yet to be a patient. Before it is a political matter involving impeachment or the 25th Amendment, it is a medical matter. The physical danger due to psychological impairment needs to be removed, and we are bound by our own professional code not to abandon persons or the public in danger. We are even legally bound to take steps to protect potential victims if warning is insufficient and security staff will not act. If the personal physician is unavailable or too conflicted to do so, any physician can.

A 72-hour hold does not require court intervention and is enough for a solid evaluation. There is no shortage of mental health professionals willing to put their names to commitment papers, and multiple legal groups have offered to file for a court order for security staff to cooperate. All we need are auspices so as to show it is not a coup or something nefarious — although, at this point, we may need to proceed anyway because the populace is growing too sick to see any intervention as legitimate unless it is illegitimate. This is common in mental health settings, and we apply the proper treatment according to standard anyway with the hope that patients will improve enough to see that you have helped them — which happens most of the time. It is this nature of mental disease that has allowed for civil commitment laws to be possible in a country that protects civil liberties.”

Could you imagine the future of our system if a Speaker of the House could have a president civilly committed for involuntary examination? Some Republicans would no doubt have asked Pelosi’s GOP predecessor for the same civil confinement of President Obama. We would need a regular presidential suite at St. Elizabeth’s. Lee herself shows the potential for securing favorable rulings from doctors who believe no sane person could hold certain political views or take certain actions.

It would be, in a word, madness.

Ron Paul: Should Racists Get Health Care?

Authored by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace & Prosperity,

Political correctness recently took a dangerous turn in the United Kingdom when the North Bristol National Health Service Trust announced that hospital patients who use offensive, racist, or sexist language will cease receiving medical care as soon as it is safe to end their treatment.

r />

The condition that treatment will not be withdrawn until doing so is safe seems to imply that no one will actually suffer from this policy. However, health-care providers have great discretion to determine when it is “safe” to withhold treatment. So, patients could be left with chronic pain or be denied certain procedures that could improve their health but are not necessary to make them “safe.” Patients accused of racism or sexism could also find themselves at the bottom of the NHS’s infamous “waiting lists,” unable to receive treatment until it truly is a matter of life and death.

Since many people define racism and sexism as “anything I disagree with,” the new policy will no doubt lead to people being denied medical care for statements that most reasonable people would consider unobjectionable.

This is not the first time NHS has withheld treatment because of an individual’s behavior. A couple years ago, another local health committee announced it would withhold routine or nonemergency surgeries from smokers and the obese. Since reducing smoking and obesity benefits both individual patients and the health care system as a whole, this policy may appear defensible. But denying or delaying care violates medical ethics and sets a dangerous precedent. If treatment could be denied to smokers and the obese, then it could also be denied to those who engage in promiscuous sex, drive over the speed limit, don’t get the “proper” number of vaccinations for themselves and their children, or have “dangerous” political views.

Government bureaucrats denying care to individuals for arbitrary reasons is the inevitable result of government interference in the health-care market. Government intervention is supposed to ensure quality and affordable (or free) care for all. But, government intervention artificially lowers the costs of health care to patients while increasing costs to providers. As demand rises and supply falls, government imposes rationing to address the shortages and other problems caused by prior government interference.

Rationing has been part of American health care at least since the passage of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973. Every plan to expand government’s role in health care contains some form of rationing.

Advocates for government intervention in health care will counter complaints about rationing by saying the related health-care decisions are being made to benefit people’s quality of life. But, claiming government officials know how medical treatment can best enhance quality of life is as absurd as claiming that government officials know the correct prices of automobiles.

The only way to reverse the slide into national health care and rationing is for those who understand the economic and moral case for liberty to keep pushing to replace Obamacare and all other government intrusions into health care. Government-controlled health care must be replaced by free-market health care that empowers individuals to determine for themselves what does and does not enhance their quality of life.

Michigan Becomes First State To Ban E-Cigarette Sales, Citing Youth 'Health Emergency'

zerohedge News michigan becomes first state e-cigarette sales citing youth health emergency All https://www.zerohedge.com   Discuss    Share

Michigan has become the first state to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes after its health department declared youth vaping a public health emergency.

The ban is effective immediately and applies to all retail and online sales in the state, with businesses given 30 days to comply. According to The Washington Post, which broke the story early Wednesday, the ban will last for six months at which point lawmakers can renew it for another six months. Simultaneously there's reported legislation being developed to put in place a perm

Surprisingly it was Michigan and not California or New York - both typically at the forefront of banning products over health fears - to be the first to take aggressive legislative action. San Francisco was the first city that recently enacted a ban on e-cigarettes.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) cited the state health department to say youth vaping was an urgent public health emergency which demanded immediate action.

“My number one priority is keeping our kids safe and protecting the health of the people of Michigan,” Whitmer said. Though ironically vaping has been marketed as a "safer" alternative to traditional cigarettes, critics say the variety of flavors are designed to appeal to young people

Gov. Whitmer cited this critique in her rationale for pursuing a ban, per The Washington Post:

She complained that e-cigarette companies are using sweet flavors, such as bubble gum and “fruit loops,” to hook young people on nicotine, with potentially long-term harmful consequences.

Opponents of a ban or restriction on e-cigarettes cite the nearly half-million deaths per year as a result of the nation's traditional cigarette smoking epidemic, according to most studies. Vaping supporters say that though e-cigarettes' long term effects are as yet unknown, they are certainly safer than regular cigarettes.

Late last year US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams formally declared e-cigarettes an "epidemic" while citing a "historic, unprecedented increase" in use.

And last week a NBC report based on data from multiple state health departments said almost 300 people have been hospitalized nationwide as a result of problems connected to vaping, such as lung-related illness.

Meanwhile, e-cigarette and "smoking alternative" comany Juul has reportedly poured millions into lobbying against bans on its product; however, Michigan's relatively fast move to impose the ban is sign of a likely coming domino effect.

Ebola: The Global Health Threat Most Are Still Ignoring

zerohedge News ebola global health threat most still ignoring All https://www.zerohedge.com   Discuss    Share

Authored by Mac Slavo via SHTFplan.com,

Almost a week ago, the World Health Organization declared the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak to be a “global health emergency.” Since then, most have failed to take notice or just plain ignored the ongoing problem.

The emergency declaration came after a man infected with the Ebola virus brought the disease to the Congolese city of Goma, a highly populated transit hub with an international airport and next door to Rwanda. As it stands today, the curr

ent Ebola outbreak has surpassed 2,500 cases and 1,500 deaths concentrated largely in two provinces in eastern Congo.

EBOLA OUTBREAK Declare “GLOBAL HEALTH EMERGENCY”

Emergency declarations are issued sparingly, reserved for outbreaks that pose a serious threat to public health and could spread to other countries. Only four such declarations have been made in the past: in 2009, for pandemic influenza; in 2014, for a polio resurgence in several countries; in 2014, for the Ebola epidemic in West Africa; and in 2016, for the Zika virus epidemic. –New York Times

The response effort has been hampered by a deadly mix of armed conflict, distrust, and lack of medical resources, according to a report by Tech Crunch.  Less than half of the affected population trusts the government and Ebola responders and armed groups have even killed responders. Public health experts expect the outbreak to continue into the foreseeable future. So where’s the notice to the public?

Outside the public health community, there has been relatively little concern in America about the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history. During the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic, which also generated an emergency declaration, the public was alerted to the numerous health concerns that rapidly became global.

When determining the amount of attention an event should receive, public health professionals and news editors face a similar question: is this event significantly different from the baseline, or what’s expected? If so, the event can be considered an outbreak and demands the public’s attention. If not, the event would be considered part of the expected baseline and not enter the public consciousness. –Tech Crunch

If that’s true, does the lack of coverage mean people aren’t going to be susceptible to this particular story and ratings will drop?  Most likely. Propaganda has been selling more than real news. Could the very outbreak be nothing more than fear propaganda designed to brainwash people into parting with their own money? Absolutely! In fact,Tech Crunch admits it:

For potential donors, the absence of fear and public attention is causing a shortfall in funding needed for response and preparedness efforts (e.g., surveillance, healthcare infrastructure) that can limit an outbreak’s spread.

If fear can be leveraged to contain the current outbreak and fund preparedness efforts, fear can also eliminate future Ebola headlines for the right reasons; because we eliminated the threat, not because it becomes an endemic problem.Tech Crunch

But what we do know, is that Ebola is a very real and deadly viral infection.  And there are steps that can be taken to prevent it from the preparedness community. We suggest you prepare yourself and don’t count on any government agency to help you. You shouldn’t ignore Ebola, however, you should prepare so that you are not living in fear of it either.

While the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization have both expressed serious concerns that we are on the brink of disaster, border enforcement agencies seem blithely unconcerned. It’s really up to you to protect your family. This is a collection of some of the best information in the preparedness community to help keep you and your family safe throughout this potential pandemic. Checklists are provided at the end of the book to help you gather the necessary supplies quickly and efficiently.
